Tips to Avoiding Unnecessary Refrigeration Repairs

Posted on

Although your refrigerator is one of the most commonly used appliances in the home, it also happens to be one of the most neglected. This neglect is what makes most homeowners miss out on warning signs that their appliance could be requiring repairs, thus leading to costly malfunction. In order to avoid unnecessary refrigerator repairs, it would be pertinent to ensure that it is properly maintained. Here are some handy tips that could go a long way in prolonging your fridge's lifespan by avoiding unnecessary repairs.

Ensure the refrigerator's condenser coils are clean

Your fridge's condensor coils are situated either behind the unit or below it. Over time, they are prone to accumulating dust, grime, pet dander and more. If your fridge's condensor coils are filthy, the appliance will have a hard time transferring heat from its interior to the exterior. If left unchecked, this causes the fridge to work harder and run for longer stretches of time. This in turn makes the condensor coils retain more heat than they are designed to bear. Eventually, it will lead to the decline of the fridge's functionality as the condensor coils and other adjacent electrical components will become damaged by the increased temperatures. It is always best to inspect your condensor coils from time to time to ensure that they are not layered with dirt. If you cannot easily access them, it is recommended to enlist the services of refrigerator contractors who can carry out the proper maintenance.

Ensure the refrigerator's doors stay closed

Another common mistake that homeowners make is opening and closing the refrigerator doors unnecessarily. The longer the unit's doors are open, the warmer the interior becomes. This then causes the condenser to work harder to cool the fridge, which could cause the condenser to overheat. This should not be taken lightly as the refrigerator's condenser is one of the most expensive components that you could pay for to be replaced. Thus, it would be in your best interests to ensure that it is not at risk of overheating as this could mean having to replace your refrigerator in its entirety.

Ensure there is sufficient airflow outside the fridge

Although your refrigerator may look neat installed in a snug space, this could also greatly affect its functionality. For a fridge to operate at optimum, it requires proper ventilation around it. This is because as it is cooling its interior, it is also emanating heat while operating. Without proper ventilation, this heat will not have a way to escape from the fridge and will cause the internal components to overheat. Over time, you may to engage in costly refrigerator repairs to replace the failing components.
